Tech to Help Your Autistic Kid (feat. Aaron Shute of Brain Power) S3E13

In this episode, I talk with Aaron Shute from Brain Power. We discuss how they are using highly specialized software and Google Glass to improve the lives of Autistic kids and adults. Brain Power uses augmented reality to help Autistic individuals better interact with the world. The technology is absolutely amazing but please understand that this is very expensive and will not be for everyone. Aaron explains that they normally work directly with schools but since schools are shut down, they are trying to make available to parents for the first time. They recognize that it’s expensive (because Google Glass is VERY expensive) and in order to make this as accessible as possible to parents, they are offering a 40% discount. My goal with this episode is to make you aware of things that are out there and this is something that making is making a huge difference in classrooms across the country. My 11 Year Old Talks About Life On Lockdown (feat. Emmett Gorski) S3E10

In this weeks (albeit late) episode, I talk about life on lockdown and what it's like to manage this COVID19 health crisis as a single Dad to 3 Autistic kids. Gavin, (my oldest) is immunocompromised and I have to walk a very, very fine line in order to keep him safe. It's not easy by any stretch of the imagination but we're muddling through. Later in the episode, Emmett, my 11 year old, joins me to discuss how this whole lockdown is impacting him. He does an amazing job of expressing his thought on our current situation. He was very fidgety, and that fidgeting was picked up by the microphone. I cleaned it up as best I could and I'm excited for you to hear Emmett's point of view on this. :-) I wanted to provide you with a list of reliable sources for information regarding COVID19. COVID19 Update March 14, 2020

I've been getting a lot of questions in regards to how I'm managing my household as the COVID19 pandemic worsens. I thought it would be better to do it this way and hopefully this helps someone. I'm NOT an expert and I hate giving advice but what I'm going to do is share a little bit about how I managing to keep us safe, sane and moving forward during these scary times. As you know, my oldest has CVID or Common Variable Immunodeficiency. This means his immune system is severely compromised and that puts him at a much higher risk, should he get sick. I have to exercise extreme caution right now, without freaking my kids out. It's a very difficult balance but I have no choice but to maintain it as best I can. Please stay safe. Be kind to each other. Wash your hands. Be prepared. Take this seriously. Don't panic. I wanted to provide you with a list of reliable sources for information regarding COVID19. Why Genetic Testing is Vital for Kids with Autism (feat. Lukas Lange of Probably Genetic) S3E9

In this week's episode, I speak with Lukas Lange, the CEO and co-founder of Probably Genetic. Probably Genetic is working very hard to make genetic testing more accessible to families who need it. Families like mine. Lukas and I discuss what genetic testing is, the role genetics plays in our lives and why it's so important to genetically test kids diagnosed with Autism. We also discuss the many hurdles to obtaining genetic testing in our current healthcare system, including cost and wait times, as well as why it's a major problem for many families. Lukas also shares what Probably Genetic is doing to cut through all of this and make this invaluable testing accessible to families at a significantly reduced cost and in a fraction of the time. I've been consulting with Probably Genetic for over a year and helping them to better understand the unique needs of Autism families and how they can better meet those needs. Changing the lives of kids with critical illness (feat. Kate Mazelin of GKTW) S3E8

This is a very special episode and one that's very near and dear to my heart. While on our recent trip to Orlando, I had a chance to sit down for a face to face with Kate Mazelin, Marketing Director of Give Kids The World. Give Kids The World is an amazing place where kids with terminal, life threatening or serious health condions, along with their families, can spend time, make memories and find hope. My family is one such family and we spent a week at Give Kids The World in 2017, when my oldest son has his wish granted. Kate and I had an emotional discussion about what makes GKTW so special, why they do what they do and how they changed my family's life. About Kate Mazelin: Kate Mazelin is the Marketing Director at Give Kids The World. Kate has been with the Village since 2014. Prior to working for the Village she was the Program Director at Morning Dove Therapeutic Riding Inc. in Zionsville, Indiana. Kate is a licensed therapeutic riding instructor, holds a certificate in mental health intervention and has worked with children on the autism spectrum since 2005. At Give Kids The World, Kate is a part of a dedicated team whose goal is to build the Give Kids The World brand and to build a battalion of supporters willing to donate to, volunteer for, and advocate on behalf of the organization.   Find Give Kids The World: Website: https://www.gktw.org/ (https://www.gktw.org/) Twitter: https://twitter.com/GKTWVillage (@GKTWVillage) Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/gktwvillage/ (https://www.facebook.com/gktwvillage/) Instagram: https://instagram.com/gktwvillage (https://instagram.com/gktwvillage) http://bit.ly/2ZPjjAx (Support This Podcast) You can find me: https://my.captivate.fm/theautismdad.com (theautismdad.com) Twitter: https://twitter.com/theautismdad (https://twitter.com/theautismdad) Learn more about your ad choices. Shifting the Focus on Autism and Grief (feat. Taylor Linloff) S3E7

In this week's episode, I speak with Taylor Linloff. Taylor is 25 years old and was diagnosed with Autism and severe anxiety in 2018. Taylor became an advocate after being cast in CBC's "You Can't Ask That" Docuseries and is listed as #10 in The Mighty's top 14 autistic influencers. Taylor also lost her father, Conrad, last month to cancer and she wanted to use her experience to help others, like myself, better understand how Autistic people grieve. "It's unfortunate that people still think autistics can't emotionally connect or love someone to mourn them when they're gone. We, as in society as a whole, needs to shift our focus and understanding to better understand, support, and respect our emotional capabilities." - Taylor Linloff Taylor titled and picked the artwork for this episode. The rose is dedicated to both her late father and neurodiversity. :-) You can Find Taylor:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AspirationalAutistic/ (https://www.facebook.com/AspirationalAutistic/) Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/aspirationalautistic/ (https://www.instagram.com/aspirationalautistic/) Twitter: https://www.instagram.com/aspirationalautistic/ (https://www.instagram.com/aspirationalautistic/) Website: https://aspirationalautistic.wordpress.com/2020/01/17/featured-in/ (https://aspirationalautistic.wordpress.com/) http://bit.ly/2ZPjjAx (Support This Podcast) You can find me: https://my.captivate.fm/theautismdad.com (theautismdad.com) Twitter: https://twitter.com/theautismdad (https://twitter.com/theautismdad) Learn more about your ad choices.
